In general Lethrinops are not very rare. As many lives deep. And travel over big distance. Of course some are threaten by fishermen, as it is easy to pull big nets over the sandy habitat.
But in general only few places are typically being caught. In Tanzania Itungi is very typical. As exporters form alliances with local fishermen. Because at Itungi, there are seasons where big schools of what is called a species flok, will enter very shallow depths like 1-3 meters. Here they are easily caught. “Red cap” Itungi among them.
Lethrinops other places are also very common. But local exporters does not have very big experience catching the wilds from deeper levels.
Personally I think an expedition prioritize deeper types could be very interesting.
In my findings of the “fire crest” we found Aulonocara and Lethrinops that are still belonging to the unknown depths.
Not saying all the Lethrinops come from deeper habitat. Many are found also more shallow.
Lumbila is on my expedition spring 2021... I hope COVID-19 situation can allow going from February
